2903 community service self –Reflection point:

2903 community service self –Reflection point:

1) The volunteering I did was in Zayed Higher Organization which is for special need students. There are many departments like vocational training, education, psychological care etc. My volunteering service was for five days organized by my College.

 2) My view of life has completely changed, I feel more motivated seeing them, and would like to be a part of them if given a chance in future. These students proved to be better than normal, they were so motivated and eager to learn new things. This made me change my attitude and thinking about them.

3) I have learnt about different conditions that student’s face and how they overcome. I joined the sports group on day one and played soccer with them, they played so well. I felt very different knowing how students are involved in different fields although has some problems
I have also learnt that students were having problems of low syndrome like foot or ankle disability, shoulder disability but still they were living normal life and were playing sports like normal people. This shows that it is we, normal people who regard them different from us but they have ability better than us.

4) When I came there for the first day, I had a feeling that maybe I may not like them or feel different but after five days, I feel I really want to be with them for more days. If I get a chance, I will again join them and will work with them in different things. I would always like to volunteer such programs and would suggest the same for all students in our college. Just being physically incomplete does not matter what is important is your behavior and thinking to handle such situations.

During that day , we spent a good time. The most interesting thing was that the different group of students, who I met, who are deaf mute showed good ability to learn with sign language. They also enjoyed playing sport such as soccer. I did not have anything about sign language, so I found it so difficult to communicate with them easily. Thanks to the existence of the instructor, I could communicate with them and make them understand me. Overall, I enjoyed the experience with these students very much.

I missed two hours in my volunteering work, so I took the decision to spend more time during the 5th and the 6th days; 4 hours in each day. As I did not attend from the beginning, it was a good chance for me because I could meet new students.
The group that I worked with included most of students with down syndrome and a few of students who have other disabilities such as foot and ankle disability ,  and disability in the arm , shoulder and hand.

Day Five

During that day, I explained the schedule that we should have done with the students so that we can support them with sport. Professor Gregory attended as he visited ZHO sports that day.

We sat in a circle and started stretching as soon as the bus arrived. This was a kind of warm up in order to prepare the students later on for playing some sports. The majority of the students in my group expressed their interest in playing handball and said that they prefer it even to soccer.

During that day, we enjoyed playing soccer.
It was amazing that the older students enjoyed the sport of dodge ball extremely. I was watching the younger students while they were playing handball and they were extremely involved in the game.

It was really an amazing day.

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

That day thing seemed to be very quiet, as some of the students did not attend. In addition, it was not easy to form teams in order to play their favorite sport. Nevertheless, we spent some time with the students chatting with them about the things they liked. A few spoke up, but the majority of the students did not share much information with us. It was fantastic that they shared us most of our interests.

The day was quite short and very amazing.

I did not have the chance to post what I performed yesterday, so I would like to extend my apology.  The week was very busy with a full schedule of exams. However , I am going to sum up what had occurred during that period.

Day 1:-

We spent a short time trying to get to know each other. We get acquainted with the coaches, Miss Nabila, the security guards and te students. We felt that the things were difficult, but I really tried very hard and I was extremely very delighted.  I worked as it was my first day and the experience was really great because I felt that I provided someone with useful help and supported them effectively. I also very happy to talk with new people and get to know them. I could learn about the different conditions of the students. Barriers between us were removed and we hd the feeling that there was a lot of things that we shared. Although it was difficult for me to learn the name of everyone , I really enjoyed the experience to a great extent.
Finally , the coach told us that people would be grateful if we wore the sports clothes and spend some time with them playing. We heartily agreed and went in our sports clothes to play sports.
.

 Day 2:-

We went to the indoor gym and we were dressed in sports clothes. Everyone was warm up. I was told by the coach what I should do. He told me that I should act as a referee and coach the students as well. However, it was not difficult to manage the first hour.
After that we were divided to play soccer. We were divided into two teams. Some argued about who should lead the team although most of the students who were me were the old ones. The coach dealt with the situation wisely and explained to me what I should do in such situations. The coach started the game and was very pleased although we did not win the match. These two days had a great influence on me. We learned how to put away all our differences and form a strong relationship between us. We really felt as we were young children enjoying our time and having a lot of fun.

5.    Time/ schedule: students will volunteer for how many hours / week? Days?

-          The schedule will  be 4 hours per week divided into two days for 5 weeks. because of the conflict in the students schedule the volunteering will be as shown below :

      Wednesday, 12:30 - 2:30

6.    To be successful what need to be done?

  7.    What are the Benefits to the participants?

-       Volunteers will get a positive experience, enhancing our skills and revealing our talent.  While also participating we will learn new things and look at life from another perspective.

8. Any potential problems you see arising??

-          The only problem we may face is the hardness of dealing with some of the disable people because they need special care, attention and being patient with them.

Exercise #8   Research project - Volunteers in Education

Have a look at this page on the internet:http://www.worldvolunteerweb.org/browse/sectors/education.html

This page has some ideas about how people can volunteer through education projects.

Once you have read through the pages, you need to work in volunteer project groups.
In your groups, come up with or choose a project which you think can be advanced through an educational setting. There are no restrictions, but your idea should be innovative and should aim at adding real value to the people you are trying to help.

As you are working through your project, one of you should be putting together a short presentation (Powerpoint, etc) to explain to the rest of the group what you are trying to achieve; 3-5 minutes.

You should aim to cover the following points, at least:

1.                   What are the aims of the project?  Helping and encouraging the orphans in Kabul, Afghanistan by providing food and shelter as well as education and encourage them to try new things.

2.                   Who are the target audience, and why? The Orphans, to give them moral support in what they would be doing.
3.                   What activities would your project involve? Education, sports activities such as football and encouraging them to do new things with each other and form social bonds.
4.                   Who would be volunteering? Why? Anyone who would be willing to volunteer as it is open for all ages. We see that when volunteering is open for all, not only do the volunteers help themselves but they also help the community.
5.                   What are the benefits your project could bring to the target audience? Since the orphans would see various people help them and encourage them, their self-esteem would boost up helping them be more confident in what they do even when they become adults.
6.                   How would you look into launching your project with reference to the relevant authorities in the UAE and in the country you have targeted? We would look at schools, science and sports centers to help with catering the minds of children to better benefit them throughout their life, whether it is in the UAE or any other country.
7.                   What problems do you think you might come across and how would you try to get around them?  The main issue would be communication, as some might not speak the common language, we would get around this from schools or language centers, the other issue would be financing these facilities, to overcome them we would have to get donations and volunteers.
